THE ESCALATING PRICE OF LUMBER

Just when you thought the market was safe...

Kerry Wood and the Cubs avoided arbitration, agreeing on a 1 yr, $9.75M contract. A multi-year deal is apparently still in works.

Mercy. I guess it's not an outrageous amount of money. And Wood has all the potential in the world, but still...

Toronto fans, Mr. Roy Halladay is going to be very expensive to keep around. $9.75M for a 26-year-old with high work loads, past injury troubles, and no 15 win seasons? How much will a 26-year-old coming off 19 win and 22 win seasons (plus a shiny new Cy Young) cost?

Boy, I hope they don't go to arbitration.

SASAKI "RETIRES"

Well, it's official. The Mariners unquestionably could have afforded Guerrero.

So will the new Mariner closer will be RHP Hasegawa (1.48 ERA, 16 for 17 in saves last year), LHP Guardado (41 saves, .208 BAA), or RHP Soriano (10.5 K/9, 5.67 K/BB)?

Even the boys at U.S.S. Mariner are unsually optimistic.
